Workshop overview:

Join me in my home county, on the rugged North Sea coastline of Norfolk, for an exciting action packed 4 days of wildlife photography! As autumn turns to winter, Norfolk’s windswept beaches are filled by over 2000 Grey and Common Seals. Adult Seals haul themselves out onto the beach to give birth in winter, when the pupping season gets underway. With 10 years of experience photographing Seals in winter, I’ll show you how to ethically approach and photograph Grey Seals and their pups, with animal welfare at the forefront of capturing images. We’ll spend the fresh winter mornings and evenings on the beach, utilising the rich golden light. Shooting in some potentially bracing coastal weather will allow you to capture a stunning and varied portfolio of images. Arriving before sunrise allows us to locate suitable subjects and get into position with minimal disturbance. Having one guide and a small group will allow us to minimise disturbance to these sensitive pinnipeds. The highlight will be photographing the beautiful Grey Seal pups at a safe distance, as they endure the most vulnerable stage in their lives.

You will be placed in the best possible positions to capture any interactions between females and their pups. We will focus on the behaviours exhibited by bigger male bull seals, which are intercepted by fiercely protective females defending their pups. Violent fights often break out between the males, which battle to maintain their rank on the beach. There is good potential to observe and photograph the beaches other inhabitants, including Turnstones and Sanderling which forage, hyperactively, along the tide line. Winter visitors include Snow Bunting, which may be present on the beach foraging amongst the dunes in the sand. On the surrounding open fields, the regal over wintering Common Cranes can be found. We will spend 2 sessions on the beach during the day, broken up in the middle of the day at lunch time. We will stay for 4 nights at our beautiful Norfolk eco-barn where all meals including breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided. I have limited the group size on this workshop to provide maximum tuition time. This special, secluded stretch of coastline is a haven for wildlife!
